The Technique

What Is CMYK Four Color Process Screen Printing?

Four color process printing uses four standard transparent inks — Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black (Key) — printed as microscopic halftone dots that overlap and mix optically to reproduce the full visible color spectrum from a single image.

Because the inks are transparent, they rely on the white of the fabric beneath to reflect light back through the ink layers. This makes CMYK the ideal choice for white garments and light-colored shirts where the substrate provides the brightness needed for accurate color reproduction.

CMYK is the most economical full-color separation method — only four screens are needed, setup costs are lower, and the separation process is faster than simulated process. It's the go-to solution for printing photographs, editorial designs, and highly detailed artwork on light apparel.

  • Best for white and light-colored garments
  • Only 4 screens — lowest setup cost for full color
  • Standard halftone angles: C=15°, M=75°, Y=0°, K=45°
  • Typical LPI: 55–65 for auto presses, 45–55 for manual
  • Dot gain compensation built into every separation
  • ICC color profile management for color accuracy

Real Separation Files

What Your Files Look Like

Every separation is delivered as an organized, print-ready Photoshop file with all four channels clearly labeled and halftoned.

What's Included

Everything in Every CMYK Separation

We don't just convert your file to CMYK and hand it back. Every separation includes dot gain compensation tuned to your press and mesh count, ICC profile management for color accuracy, and optional spot color add-ons for out-of-gamut hues.

Important: Certain vivid colors — bright oranges, saturated greens, fluorescents, and metallics — fall outside the CMYK gamut. For these hues we recommend adding one or two spot color channels alongside the CMYK base. We will flag these in your artwork and suggest the most cost-effective solution.

Our Process

From Artwork to Print-Ready CMYK in 4 Steps

We handle every technical detail so you can focus on printing. Just send the artwork — we deliver a file ready to burn straight to screens.

01

Send Your File

We accept PSD, AI, PDF, PNG, JPG, TIFF, CDR — any resolution. We'll advise if quality needs enhancing before separating.

02

Color & Profile Setup

We convert to CMYK mode, apply the correct ICC profile, and adjust brightness, contrast, and color balance for screen printing.

03

Halftone Separation

Each channel is halftoned at the correct LPI, angle (C=15°, M=75°, Y=0°, K=45°), and dot gain is compensated for your mesh.

04

File Delivery

You receive an organized PSD with named CMYK channels, print-order notes, and ink density recommendations — same day.

Why Choose CMYK Process

The Smartest Way to Print Full Color on Light Garments

Four screens. Infinite colors. CMYK is the most economical path to photo-quality results on white and light-colored apparel.

Lowest Setup Cost

Only four screens needed — significantly lower than simulated process. Fewer screens mean less ink mixing, faster makeready, and lower per-print cost on large runs.

True Photographic Quality

CMYK accurately reproduces any photograph on white fabric. Smooth gradients, skin tones, detailed textures — the transparent inks blend seamlessly on light substrates.

Industry Universal Standard

Every print shop worldwide can run CMYK separations. No special inks or equipment needed — our files work with any screen printing press and any RIP software.

How It Compares

CMYK vs Other Separation Methods

Choose the right separation based on your garment color, design type, and budget. When in doubt, ask us — we'll recommend the best approach for your specific artwork.

Common Questions

CMYK Process FAQ

CMYK four color process separation divides your full-color artwork into four transparent ink channels — Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. These are printed as overlapping halftone dots that mix optically on the fabric to reproduce the full spectrum of color in your image. It's the most economical way to print photographs and complex full-color artwork on white or light-colored garments.
CMYK inks are transparent — they have no white pigment to block the dark fabric. On dark garments the inks absorb into the fabric color instead of reflecting light, making prints look muddy and washed out. For dark shirts, we strongly recommend simulated process separation with an opaque white underbase, which is specifically designed for dark substrates.
CMYK has a finite color gamut. Vivid oranges, bright greens, neons, and metallic colors fall outside what cyan, magenta, yellow, and black can mix. Fluorescent and metallic inks contain special pigments that CMYK cannot replicate. For these hues we add one or two spot color channels alongside the CMYK base — we identify any out-of-gamut colors in your artwork and recommend the most cost-effective fix.
Dot gain is the spreading of ink dots when they hit the fabric — the printed dot is always slightly larger than the dot on the film or screen. If this isn't compensated in the separation, the printed image comes out darker and with less detail than intended. We build dot gain compensation into every CMYK separation based on your mesh count and ink type, so what you see in the file is what you get on the shirt.
We typically use 55–65 LPI for automatic presses and 45–55 LPI for manual presses. Higher mesh counts (230–305 TPI) support finer LPI and sharper detail. We set LPI based on your specific press type and mesh count — just tell us your setup when you submit your artwork and we'll calibrate accordingly.
The professional method is through RIP software or a PostScript printer, which accurately converts the halftone channels to your output device. However, it is also possible to print directly from Photoshop on a standard printer. We include detailed printing notes with every file — and we're happy to walk you through the process step by step if you're new to CMYK screen printing. Just ask when you order.
We accept PSD, AI, PDF, PNG, JPG, TIFF, EPS, CDR, PPT, and PUB files on both Mac and PC. For best results submit your artwork at 300 DPI or higher at the final print size. Low-resolution files can often be enhanced or vectorized — contact us before submitting if you're unsure about your file quality.
