What Is CMYK Four Color Process Screen Printing?
Four color process printing uses four standard transparent inks — Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black (Key) — printed as microscopic halftone dots that overlap and mix optically to reproduce the full visible color spectrum from a single image.
Because the inks are transparent, they rely on the white of the fabric beneath to reflect light back through the ink layers. This makes CMYK the ideal choice for white garments and light-colored shirts where the substrate provides the brightness needed for accurate color reproduction.
CMYK is the most economical full-color separation method — only four screens are needed, setup costs are lower, and the separation process is faster than simulated process. It's the go-to solution for printing photographs, editorial designs, and highly detailed artwork on light apparel.
- Best for white and light-colored garments
- Only 4 screens — lowest setup cost for full color
- Standard halftone angles: C=15°, M=75°, Y=0°, K=45°
- Typical LPI: 55–65 for auto presses, 45–55 for manual
- Dot gain compensation built into every separation
- ICC color profile management for color accuracy
